Why does the 'x' card in the flashcards show a word ending in 'x'?
We know it may be surprising to see that the /x/ card in your Pre-reader or Level 1 flashcards features a word ending in /x/ when all other cards show a word beginning with the featured letter. Don't worry, this is intentional!
When we teach the /x/ sound to new readers, we focus on the /ks/ sound of x, as in 'box' rather than the less common /z/ sound, as in 'xylophone'. Therefore, we feature words that end in this sound, such as 'fox' and 'box', so children can hear and practice this sound. On our newer flashcards, you'll see an asterisk and a small note: *Ending Sound, like below. The older packs (with red flash cards) do not include this note, but the rationale is the same.
